New emoji! π
This week, in celebration of World Emoji Day on July 17, Apple showed some of the new emoji coming to Apple devices this fall. I think they look really great.
This yearβs batch adds many emoji that will make the entire set more inclusive.
One change is the Holding Hands emoji, which previously only came in variants of a man and a woman, (π«), two men (π¬), or two women (π) holding hands, will now come in every possible emoji skin tone combination of either person holding hands.
This yearβs emoji also add more disability-themed emoji to represent people and concepts for many different types of ability. Really cool.
The 2019 batch also includes two emoji I submitted, the yawning face and the waffle. I think they look fantastic.
I expect there will be some debate about whether Appleβs round waffle emoji or every other vendorsβ square waffle emoji is the βcorrectβ interpretation of a waffle. I split a round waffle with my fiancee every weekend, so my vote is that the round waffle is the correct interpretation. (As the submitter of the proposal that birthed the waffle emoji, maybe my vote counts double π)
The new emoji should be on Apple devices this fall. They should appear on devices and services from other vendors throughout 2019.
If you ever want to submit your own emoji proposal, follow the instructions on this page. A proposal takes a few hours of work, but at the end of the process, you could have created an image that eventually shows up on nearly every personal computing device in the world. Worth it for a few hours of effort, IMO.
(Or, you can be Ford and make a $50,000 marketing campaign to propose a pickup truck emoji. I would balk at the expense of hiring an agency for a proposal, but Ford got me talking about their company and the emoji, so I guess they got the marketing they were looking for. π‘)
